IRS Get Transcript
Online Tutorial If you need a copy of your
Federal Tax transcript, you can use the IRS
Get Transcript Online option to view, print, or
download your transcript.
In addition, if you have not
filed a Federal tax return, you can use this
exact same process to obtain an electronic
version of the Verification of Non-Filing letter.
This tutorial will show
you how to do that.
Go to irs.gov.
Choose "Get Your Tax Record." Click on "Get
Transcript Online." You will need an account
to use this service.
If you do not have an account,
choose "Create Account." Once you proceed, you
will then be asked for the following information:
• Your Social Security
Number, date of birth, filing status and
mailing address from your latest tax return.
• Access to your email account.
• Your personal account
number from a credit card, mortgage,
home equity loan, home equity line of
credit or car loan, and • A mobile phone with
your name on the account.
If you already have a
username, type in your username and choose "Log In." First, you will be asked
to verify your identity through a confirmation code
sent to an email address.
Enter your first name, last
name, and email address.
Choose "Send code." Retrieve the code from
the email and enter it in the box provided.
Choose "Continue." Next, you will enter your
personal information, first and last
name, date of birth, and Social Security Number.
You will select whether or
not you have filed a tax return within the past 7 years.
If you have filed
a tax return, you will need to select
your filing status.
If you have not
filed a tax return, you will not be eligible
to obtain your Tax Return Transcript online.
Instead, you will need to
request to have your Tax Return transcript mailed to you.
Enter the address of your
most recent tax return.
Choose "Continue." Next, you will need to
verify your identity through a financial
account number.
You will need to enter
one of the following:
• The last 8 digits
of a credit card.
• Student loan account number.
• Auto loan account number.
• Mortgage or home equity
loan account number.
• Home equity line of
credit account number.
If you don't have a current
credit card, student loan, auto loan, home equity
loan, or mortgage, you should select this option.
If you select this
option, you will not be eligible to obtain your
Tax Return Transcript online.
Instead, you will need to
request to have your Tax Return transcript mailed to you.
Click Continue.
You will need to
provide a mobile phone number for additional
identity verification.
You will then be sent a text
message with a one-time code.
After clicking on
"Send Message," you will be asked to provide
the one-time personal code.
If you do not have
a mobile phone, there is an option to receive
a personal code via mail.
This will take 5 - 10
calendar days to receive.
You can create your
username and password, but you not be able to
get your transcript online until you receive
your personal code.
If you are unable to get a
personal code via mobile phone or mail, there are further
options you can review.
These options will not allow
you to obtain your transcript online, but will
still assist you in obtaining a copy
of your transcript.
You will then be asked to enter
in your one-time personal code.
Click "Continue." Create a Username and Password.
Review the Password Rules
when creating your password.
Confirm or edit
your email address.
Choose a sight phrase you will
recognize when you log in.
Select a site image you will
recognize when you log in.
Choose "Continue." Choose "Continue." Select the reason you are
requesting a Tax Transcript.
For this purpose, choose
Higher Education/Student Aid.
In the Return Transcript
Box, select the year for which you would like
to retrieve your Tax Return Transcript.
Your Tax Return Transcript
will pop up as a PDF.
From here, you can
download or print your Tax Return Transcript.
Once you have
downloaded or printed your Tax Return Transcript,
sign out and close your browser.
